Farmland Preservation Plan & Zoning Ordinance

2025 Farmland Preservation Areas Update

The Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan is updated annually. The City of Fitchburg's Farmland Preservation Plan Map update is proposed to provide Dane County with updates to the City's farmland preservation areas and to ensure these areas are consistent with the requirements of the Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan. This update is also needed to prepare for the State Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) re-certification of the Fitchburg Farmland Preservation Zoning District (A-X - Exclusive Agriculture).

The map update creates two categories of Farmland Preservation Areas - medium term (20+ years) and long term (30+ years), similar to the 2014 Farmland Preservation Plan Map, which had Farmland Preservation Area I and Farmland Preservation Area II. The Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan requires that designated farmland preservation areas cannot be expected to develop within the next 20 years.

2022 Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan

Dane County updated and certified its Farmland Preservation Plan in 2022, as required by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) every ten years. The City of Fitchburg adopted the updated 2022 Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan. More information about the Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan is available at the Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan webpage.

DATCP Certification

The City of Fitchburg is included in the Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan. DATCP certification of the Dane County Farmland Preservation Plan and City's Farmland Preservation Zoning Ordinance enables qualifying landowners in the city to be eligible for the State of Wisconsin Farmland Preservation Tax Credits. The City's Farmland Preservation Zoning Ordinance applies to all lands in the City's Exclusive Agriculture (A-X) Zoning District.
