The City of Fitchburg has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking 27 consecutive years of commitment to urban forestry and environmental stewardship. In addition to this prestigious designation, Fitchburg has also received the Tree City USA Growth Award for the 12th year, highlighting the city’s dedication to expanding its tree care efforts and community engagement initiatives.

The Tree City USA program, established in 1976, recognizes municipalities across the country that prioritize urban forestry, promote sustainable tree management, and enhance green spaces. This year’s Growth Award acknowledges Fitchburg’s ongoing efforts to improve tree planting, maintenance, and educational outreach programs that benefit both residents and the local environment.

Commitment to Urban Forestry

To qualify for Tree City USA recognition, a community must meet four core standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation:

• A Tree Board or Department: Fitchburg maintains a dedicated department responsible for managing and caring for trees on public property, ensuring professional oversight of tree care efforts.

• A Public Tree Care Ordinance: The city has implemented policies to protect and maintain public trees, ensuring proper management and long-term sustainability.

• A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita: Fitchburg invests in tree planting, maintenance, and removal efforts, supporting a healthy urban canopy for future generations.

• An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation: Each year, the city celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting events and educational initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of trees in the community.

Enhancing Community Engagement and Green Spaces

Fitchburg’s continued participation in the Tree City USA program demonstrates its proactive approach to environmental conservation. By prioritizing urban forestry, the city not only enhances public spaces but also improves overall quality of life for residents.

The City of Fitchburg encourages residents to get involved in tree care initiatives and participate in upcoming Arbor Day celebrations. By working together, the community can ensure that Fitchburg remains a vibrant and environmentally responsible city for years to come.
