At approximately 5:25 am Thursday, December 12, 2024, Dane County Public Safety Communications (911) notified the Fitchburg Fire Department of a structure fire at 4520 Thurston Lane in the City of Fitchburg.
The first arriving fire personnel made entry and confirmed significant visible smoke in the first and second-floor hallway. Entry was then made into an apartment unit on the second floor where the fire was located in the bathroom. The fire had also begun to spread to the adjacent unit, but it was contained in those two apartments.
The first arriving companies quickly extinguished the fire. Due to smoke and fire damage, several building residents were displaced. Madison Metro was called to assist with a bus on the scene that provided temporary shelter for the residents. Assistance was provided by the Verona Area School District. The Boys and Girls Club has also aided the residents by providing their building as temporary shelter. The Red Cross is assisting with residents who were displaced.
Two occupants reported fire-related injuries and were evaluated by paramedics. One person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Assistance was received from the Fitchburg Police Department, FitchRona EMS, Madison Fire Department, and Verona Fire Department.
The origin and cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Fitchburg Fire Investigators.
