Details:
A burglary suspect was arrested earlier this week after an off-duty Fitchburg police officer spotted the man at a grocery store in Madison. Tuesday evening, the off-duty officer saw the man and recognized him from a surveillance video from a burglary that occurred in Fitchburg on October 31st. Fitchburg officers responded to the grocery store in Madison and took the suspect, later identified as Antonio Lane, into custody as he left the store. Officers recovered a stolen laptop in the car the man was headed to in the parking lot.
Investigators determined Lane was the suspect who broke into the package room of a senior apartment building located in the 2000 block of Traceway Drive on October 31st. While in the package room, Lane took numerous packages waiting to be picked up by residents. Detectives also determined Lane was the suspect in a theft from the office of the same apartment building earlier in the month.
Later, on the evening of November 5th, personnel from the Fitchburg Police Department executed a search warrant at Lane's apartment in the City of Madison. The search uncovered stolen property and additional evidence.
Lane made his initial appearance in Dane County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon on charges of Burglary and Theft. He was ordered to be released with a signature bond but remains in the Dane County Jail on new burglary charges related to cases in the City of Madison. Detectives from the Fitchburg Police Department are working with City of Madison Police Detectives to investigate Lane’s potential connection to other similar incidents.
