Spring Hydrant Flushing begins in Fitchburg on Monday, April 13 and continues through Friday, May 19.
Hydrant flushing helps maintain our water system by clearing sediment from water mains, checking that hydrants and valves are working properly, and ensuring the system is ready for firefighting.
If you see crews flushing hydrants on your street, please avoid running water, doing laundry, or using the dishwasher until flushing is complete. Sediment can be stirred up during the process and may cause temporary discoloration in the water.
If your water appears discolored, there is no health hazard. Simply run cold water from a tap for a few minutes until it clears. The discoloration typically dissipates within a few hours.
Please drive carefully around crews and treat them like any other road or construction workers.
