The Fitchburg Common Council is considering an annual vehicle registration fee as a potential revenue source to support transportation-related expenses with a referral at the Tuesday, March 11 Council meeting. Following the unsuccessful referendum in the fall of 2024, city officials have turned to alternative solutions to fund services. No action will be taken on this matter until the Council votes on this at its next regular meeting on April 8, 2025. If approved, an annual $40 vehicle registration fee will be added to vehicles with registration expiring in August 2025 or any vehicles registered on or after August 1, 2025. The fee would generate an estimated $1,000,000 annually for City transportation projects and be collected by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation at the time of vehicle registration or renewal.
The Fitchburg Common Council will discuss the proposed vehicle registration fee at their April 8, 2025 meeting.
