Property owners in the City of Fitchburg are anticipated to receive property tax bills the week of December 11. For the average single-family residence valued at $381,900, the City of Fitchburg portion of the property tax bill is increasing approximately 1%, from $2,542 to $2,568, which is $26. Overall, property owners will see varying tax rate increases ranging from 6.1% to 11.2% depending upon which of the three school districts (Madison, Oregon, and Verona) the property is located within. Both the Oregon and Verona School District residents approved operating referenda last year which resulted in higher taxes this year.
The Lottery Credit increased significantly in all school districts. Homeowners should double-check their property tax bill to be sure they have the lottery credit, if eligible. To be eligible, the home must have been their, or the previous owners’, primary residence as of 1/1/23. This is especially important for new home construction as the lottery credit is not automatic, and a simple application needs to be submitted to be credited the over $300.
The City of Fitchburg is piloting a new tax collection software for Dane County and are hopeful taxpayers will be patient with us as we learn the new software. Use of the drop-box, online payments, or mail is strongly encouraged. An e-check can be done online for a flat convenience fee of $1.00 (credit card payments are 2.75%). New this year the credit card acceptance vendor also offers payment by PayPal and PayPal Pay Later. In-person collections are at the side counter near the City Clerk area entrance. A benefit of the new software is that receipts will be available on Access Dane in less than a week of when the payment is receipted.
